VSGP lends a helping hand

What do you do when you have 2000 plants that can no longer be used? You give them to someone that can.

In these difficult times you can’t put a price on kindness and support. Our Victorian Schools Garden Program (VSGP) saw an opportunity to help a group in need.

The 2000 plant plugs (1000 basil and 1000 marigolds) which were especially grown for us by Majestic Young Plants, for our children's planting activity at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, found a grateful recipient at Kevin Heinze Grow.

Having cancelled their Autumn Fair and Open Day, their fundraising was seriously impacted. Thanks to Majestic Young Plants, VSGP were able to provide them with seedlings that provided a much-needed injection of funds.

The late Kevin Heinze founder of both programs believed that gardening activities should be learned by all children, so he and Paul Crowe OAM began the Victorian Schools Garden Awards in 1977. Kevin who also saw the benefits that horticulture-based therapy and recreation programs brought to children with disabilities, went on to activate Kevin Heinze Grow in 1979.

Both programs have long histories and continue to advocate the importance of gardens for their ‘hands on’ experience and health and wellbeing benefits of all ages and abilities.

In this article we paid Kevin Heinze Grow a visit to see the benefits for ourselves.
